Peoria is a suburban city of northwestern Phoenix with a population now exceeding 168,000 people. Peoria is home to Lake Pleasant which is the second-largest body of water in the entire state of Arizona. The city has 34 neighborhood parks, three public pools, two large community parks, and five dog parks.
Peoria is one of eight cities in Arizona that spans two separate counties (the northern edge of the city extends into Yavapai County). In 1956, Peoria was named the “Rose Capital of the World” and the city got its namesake from Peoria, Illinois. This is because the original settlers of the area were from Illinois and named the settlement after their hometown.

Many people visit the city because it’s home to Lake Pleasant Regional Park. The park covers over 23,000 acres of land and it has two marinas. Lake Pleasant attracts a lot of visitors because it’s one of the best places in the region to go boating, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, and camping. If you want something to do while you’re in town, you can also visit the Arizona Broadway Theatre. Many popular and entertaining performances have taken place here, including Sister Act, The Addams Family, Guys and Dolls, Mamma Mia!. Another fun place that is worth checking out is the Rio Vista Recreation Center. It’s a family-friendly and multi-purpose recreation center that features a climbing wall, indoor racquetball courts, and a public gymnasium. Also located in Peoria is the Canyon Speedway Park which is an off-road racetrack situated on the northern edge of the city.
